We have four rescue dogs.  Three are beagles that come with my significant other and the fourth is a giant dufus  that we adopted together.  This is their story.  Vital stats on the dogs...

Penny - approximately 14 years - Beagle - known issues revolve around food.  She came from a very eldery gentleman that had to go into a nursing home.  Apparently, since he wasn't able to care for himself, he also hadn't been able to feed Penny.  Our best guess is that he had been forgetting to feed Penny for fairly extended periods of time.  Penny is the grand old dame of the pack.

Waldo - approximately 4 years - Beagle/Basset - Waldo has a lot of issues including dominance, dog-aggression, cat-aggression, attachment disorder, lack of social skills.  Waldo is a bit of an outsider because of his issues.  We've been working with him and he's better but still not fully integrated into the pack.

Nellie - approximately 3 years - Pure Bred papered Beagle - issues include PTSD, territorial issues, and food issues.  Nellie gets along well with the other dogs and with men but is absolutely terrified of females - even my 4'11" mother.  She's so small that a lot of dogs regard her as a child and so aren't intimidated by her as they would normally be by an adult.  Not Nelly.  Even my mom sends her scurrying to hide.  It makes trips to the vet a bit trying since all of his assistants are female.  I've been working with her and she's finally to a point where I can hand feed her a bit.

Daddy-O - approximately 2 years - Mixed Breed Dufus - appears to be mix of Rhodesian Ridge back, Shar Pei, and Dogue De Bordeaux.  Has some dominance issues but very minor - thinks he owns his hoomans.  Terrified of the cheezy plastic fly swatter he gets spanked with, which is quite amusing for a 70# + dog.  HIs biggest issue is his ability to escape the back yard.  If anyone has ideas on how to contain a dog that can jump nearly 6 vertical feet, I'd love to hear it.  Daddy-O has been a really good influence on the pack.  His presence has mellowed Waldo's aggression.  He and Waldo have been playing together recently.  Nellie seems quite taken with him and the two of them are regular playmates.  Penny, however, has really enjoyed the big guy's arrival as she now has a regular playmate.  He's quite willing to let Penny throw him around even though she's only able to gum him.  She'll grab and ear and he'll obligingly flop onto his back and paddle his legs as Penny growls and pretends to be killing him.

Fresh Dog Food

I'm sure that you recall Penny, our 14 year old dentally challenged beagle.  Never one to turn down free pet food, we were offered a free Deli Fresh meal.  So I grabbed one and took it home.  It was Lamb, Vegetable, and Barley.  I got it home and opened it up.  Daaaang!  I - the human - don't get to eat this good.  It smelled really good too.  I almost didn't want to give it to Penny.  She loooves it though.  You can hit your local Pet Smart for a coupon for a free tub.

Nail Clippers

We were at the local PetSmart and while we there we picked up some nail clippers for the dogs.  Wow!  BIG MISTAKE!  These these are so cheap and cheezy.  I know that they have a high rating on the PetSmart web site but that must be from their own employees.  It certainly can't have been anyone who's actually used them.  We have three beagles and one dufus.  The beagles run between 30 and 40 pounds - not overly large or small - as dogs go.  The handles on the clippers started flexing while we were cutting one of the smaller beagle's nails.

The clippers left broken nails and in a couple of cases split the dog's nails.  I will never ever buy these again and I won't recommend these cheap POS's to anyone who owns anything larger than a teacup.  If anyone knows of a good brand for medium to large dogs, I'd appreciate a recommendation.

Frugal Food

Ok, I admit that I'm a dog food snob. Nothing is too good for my puppies... But Penny, our 14 year old girl, has finally gone toothless. She's more bark than bite now :/ That means no more dry food for her. In shopping for canned food, I was hoping to find the pasty deviled ham looking stuff for her. Thinking that surely the uber-cheap Wal-Mart brand would fall into this category, I happily came home with 2 weeks worth canned doggy-spam for her to try.

Much to my surprise when I opened the can, it looked more like Dinty Moore Beef Stew and less like dog food. There were large, identifiable chunks of meat, gravy, rice grains, and it didn't smell weird either. Almost enough to be tempting... I almost didn't put it in her bowl because I was afraid she might not be able to eat it. Still, it looked easier for her to get down than the dry stuff, so I went ahead and tumped it into her bowl. Much to my amazement, she snarfed it right down. I'd say that this one gets a thumbs up for frugal pet owner.
